Welcometo the portfolio of my journey through the Master's Degree in Instructional Media program at Wilkes University in cooperation with Discovery Education. I began this course of study in what many would consider the "downhill" side of my teaching career, which began in 1974. However, this degree is a testament to my own philosophy of learning which was so accurately expressed by Jack Canfield:
“I’m a big believer in growth. Life is not about achievement, it’s about learning and growth, and developing qualities like compassion, patience, perseverance, love, and joy, and so forth. And so, if that is the case, then I think one’s goals should include something which stretches us.”
Being a student as well as a teacher was stressful at times, but it also gave me a greater sense of compassion and understanding of what my students often experience in the classroom. Going back to college after 37 years on the other side of the desk is definitely a "stretching" experience, but we are never too old to learn, and I believe this journey has made me a better teacher who more fully understands the needs of today's students.
This portfolio contains some of my thoughts on educational topics as well as some of the projects I developed throughout the course of my work. I welcome your feedback and invite you to contact me if you are considering your own "growth" experience and need some encouragement or a veteran's opinions on why continuing education is SO important for teachers.
